Great audio settings but only thing you’ll hear is that of Skul using his weapon to slash and dice enemies, mostly sound effects from enemies, environment and things getting damaged. Though both its story and boss variety leave something to be desired, the quirky characters and satisfying, fast-paced combat had me eager to bone up on my. Loving the style they adapted for the game and it gives that NES/SNES gaming vibe. Skul: The Hero Slayer is an original take on a well-established genre, using its novel head-swapping mechanic to put a plethora of unique playable characters front and center. The visuals are in 2D pixel with the lovely creativity for the character and landscape design in which I had no problem with any frame rate.

The heroes are like the bosses that you’ll fight, so take it seriously and be careful on how you fight them. Weve got plenty of stories about a hero rising up to fight monsters and demons, but Skul: The Hero Slayer flips the script. I never consider the fact that I’m fighting against heroes but turns out I’m fighting against because they’re wrecking havoc on the demon world. Switches are placed on a cooldown, but its quite a short one. I’ve changed Skul to an earth spirit, water spirit and a Joker in which they have different skills due to the nature of each skull being placed and attributes that could give skul an edge during battle. Ultimately switching between heads quickly and regularly is really the key to success in Skul. I noticed that Skul can change his appearance and attribute (a bit like Dead Cells but quite difference) due to swapping skulls to another one which I found it interesting and useful in some cases while going on a run. Outside of the reset upgrades and story, Skul the Hero Slayer is largely successful. Having skills would be nice, but the gameplay is.

Once you die, you’re back at the castle near the witch who will help upgrade Skul depending on attack, defense, and other things that need to be upgraded. Skul also has access to items called Quintessence which can be found at the end of a level, after defeating a boss and can be purchased from The Black Market. There is a huge variety of skulls to find, the main issue here is that some of the skulls can be pretty useless whilst others can be severely overpowered. These can be really devastating so it makes sense that they come with a cool down so players won’t be able to spam them. Each of the skulls come with special skills and stat-boosting abilities that can really change the battle. Featuring 100 playable characters each with their own unique abilities and a. Undesirable skulls can be destroyed, granting players bone fragments that can be used to upgrade the skulls you are using. Skul is a fast-paced action rogue-lite where losing your head is encouraged.
